How hemp textile production could help fight global warming

A new report from a University of Queensland research team says it has identified a potential way to increase global hemp production by reducing the carbon footprint of textile production.

“Hemp is a very, very important crop for a number of different uses, including textile, apparel, footwear, textiles as a biofuel, biofuels, and biorefineries, so if we can improve our use of the plant in terms of both its yield and its carbon footprint, then we could potentially have some significant impacts to the climate system,” Dr Peter Macfarlane, a research associate at the University of New South Wales’ Department of Geography, told the ABC.

“And the fact that there are two potential scenarios that would see hemp use increase in Australia shows the potential for increased global production.”

The research was conducted over three years, with more than 1,000 participants.

It found that the potential impact of increasing hemp production was small and the study was inconclusive.

The paper says the impact of using hemp to increase production is limited, but it would not be able to reduce the emissions from textile and textile manufacturing.

“The carbon emissions associated with the production of hemp from the cotton industry are only one-quarter of that associated with its use as a feedstock for cotton, with the bulk of this being associated with processing of the fibre into textile fibers,” the report says.

“For the total textile production in Australia, the carbon-based CO2 impacts are lower than those of cotton production.”

Hemp can be grown in Australia and imported.

But the study found the use for hemp production to increase by 1 per cent per year would result in a carbon footprint that would increase to 7.6 per cent in the 2026-27 timeframe.

The researchers say there is still much work to be done before the use or production of industrial and synthetic fibers can be combined in a single country, but that the study indicates there is potential for future developments.

“Increasing hemp cultivation by 1.5 per cent each year would increase the amount of fibre available for textile and textile industries by 20 per cent,” the researchers said.

“This increase in fibre availability would also result in increases in the total fibre available to all sectors.”HEMP LEADERS:The report says there is currently no national or international plan for hemp cultivationThe research, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, found there is an international agreement between Australia and the United States on the management of industrial plants for industrial purposes, but no national policy on hemp cultivation in Australia.

The study was conducted by researchers from the University’s Department of Environmental and Forest Science, the University College of Australia, Queensland University, the Queensland Government and the Queensland Industrial Hemp Research Organisation.
